It’s Not Just for the Walls

Canvas and a can of paint…an easier and less expensive solution to naked, artless walls.

Whenever decorating on a budget, I always struggle with ways to add art to the walls, without having to settle for cheesy or inexpensive looking prints or canvases. Of course, it would be lovely to pop into the nearest art gallery and find something perfect, but unfortunately, this is not always a realistic option.

My suggestion…make your own art.

Sure, easier said than done. Personally, if you give me two napkins, a tablecloth and a needle and thread, I will make you a wedding dress, but put a paint brush in my hand and I am completely devoid of artistic talent. My colors continually mix to brown and my images to blobs.

The good news is wall paint.  Not only is it less expensive than oil or acrylic “big kid” paint, but it comes in thousands of fabulous “pre-mixed” colors that can be purchased in small inexpensive pints. And, it is relatively easy to work with. You can paint very simple and broad patterns with a flat sponge brush or mini roller if you struggle with a typical paint brush. The paint dries quickly and the colors are beautiful. You can even add touches of oil or acrylic on top for additional texture & interest if you are feeling daring. I have to say, I am a fan.

At the end of the day, you have not only saved money, but you have a unique, custom piece of art for your room.

Top Design Season 2 Winner, Nathan Thomas, literally dripped wall paint over the edge of his canvas to achieve his Dining Room artpiece. I love it! (photo courtesy Elle Decor)

The painting below was created entirely from wall paint and a flat sponge brush, for a San Antonio Homeless Residence. It’s not perfect, but hopefully it will add some color and life to the walls!!

Who knows, you may just find your inner artist.  Good Luck!
