From Drab to Fab: An Office Redesign Project

By , October 12, 2009 10:45 am

To say I am not a girlie-girl is a slight under-exaggeration. I am, in fact, the girl who had Godzilla breaking out of her wedding cake (it’s true). My sister on the other hand is the lover of all things pretty and pink. So, when she told me that she wanted to redesign my office, I was surprisingly excited.

I don’t like to spend money on myself, but I always see the adorableness in people’s lives around me and wonder why I sometimes appear so drab. I have quite a personality, and it’s about time I express it in my style.

My husband and I recently moved to a larger space so that I could have an office to myself. Unfortunately, two months after moving in, I had yet to really begin any decorating. My quaint little office had much to desire, as evident from the photos below.

A few weekends ago, Melanie and I got to work. The paint splashes on the wall are the only sneak peek I’m going to give you…for now.

After a long, fun weekend and giddiness from paint fumes, I’m happy to announce the transformation is almost complete. We’re waiting on some final accessories to be completed, but until then, prepare to be amazed by the craftiness of my big sis!

Sweet Child of Mine

Planning and decorating spaces for teenagers and children can be so much fun because you get the opportunity to take colorful risks and think outside the box in a really playful way.

Lately, I have been stumbling across photos of really fabulous children’s rooms that for some reason or another really stand out. Each space has a wonderful energy and playfulness without becoming a stereotypical “children’s room.” I love how each of these spaces combines unexpected color, texture and proportion in a way that is equally energetic, mature and inspiring — everything that the room of a young person should be.

To all of you boys out there who are reading this blog, I apologize in advance for the following content. But, I thought it was high time to pay tribute to the fairest color of them all.

Call me a girl, but I have always been drawn to all things pink. In honor of this attraction, I wanted to share my latest and greatest finds from the world of blush and bashful.

Lavender and Blue

By , May 28, 2009 11:15 am

Lavender and blue – who knew they went together?

I am not a huge fan of the color purple – or cobalt blue for that matter – so the thought of pairing the two together never occurred to me.

However, I recently came across pictures of designer Madeline Weinrib’s Manhattan apartment in an issue of Elle Décor, and have since changed my mind.

I am in LOVE with the way she uses various shades of lavender and blue, highlighted by graphic black and white accents. Not only does she unexpectedly combine these colors, but she mixes her art and accessories into an eclectic combination of ethnic, contemporary and antiquity.

In fact, I am so in love with the soft and sophisticated color palette that I am planning my next room around it…or at least my next pillow.

In true Madeline Weinrib fashion, I have selected not only lavender and blue accent pieces, but black and white accents for your interior styling. All of these products are available for purchase online.

Happy decorating!

Pick a Punch

When you are in need of a little sass or your decorative project is somehow lacking, consider a punch of bold color.

Like most females, I do love a perfectly color-coordinated and designed space or outfit. However, this does not mean you should be afraid to throw in an unexpected color or accessory! It can make all of the difference in the world.

In terms of color, you can’t go wrong with citrus green, an orangy-coral or a beautiful shade of turquoise. It will not only pop against its background, but highlight and compliment its surroundings simply by the juxtaposition it creates. You can try this suggestion out on yourself as well as your home.

Don’t be afraid to make a few waves and add a bold punch.
It can be the difference between everyday and eye-catching.

I love the brightness and bold colors in this necklace and super bright belt from J Crew.

I love the lime green punch of color on the wall in this West Elm Bedroom.

Throw a fun PomPom throw from Calypso into any room for a fun burst of color.

These turquoise jars and garden stools from Wisteria would look BEAUTIFUL as an accent in almost any room! Or you can check out their website for additional accessory ideas.
